In an effort to galvanize the regional semiconductor industry,
PNU appoints top industry experts as honorary professors
Including Jaehong Park and Chuljoo Hwang
Pusan National University (PNU) has named seven top experts in the semiconductor industry and academia as honorary professors. PNU has identified automotive semiconductor as an area of focus for the university's future and this marks its intention to cultivate a strategic alliance between industry and academia.
On January 4th, PNU has appointed seven experts that have had successful track records in the semiconductor industry and academic research.
The seven honorary professors include Chuljoo Hwang (Chairman of Jusung Engineering), Jaehong Park (CEO of BOS Semiconductors), Jaihyung Won (President of Tokyo Electron Korea), Youngsam Kim (CEO of KEI Consulting), Wook Bang (Head of Power Semiconductor Research Division at Korea Electrotechnology Research Institute), Miyoshi Keita (Chairman of Hitachi High-tech Korea) and Tae-Gyung Chung (CEO of Semes). These are top industry experts across semiconductor design, equipment, validation, research, academia and investment.
Chuljoo Hwang founded Joosung Engineering, a global company focused on semiconductor equipment.
Jaehong Park is the CEO of BOS Semiconductors and previously served as Vice President of Samsung Electronics after working at Motorola and IBM. He is the top expert in semiconductor design who has been recognized by the Korean government with the Order of Science and Technology Merit, which is one of the highest honors for an engineer.
Jaihyung Won currently serves as President of Tokyo Electron Korea since 2018 after previous stints at Wonik IPS and Samsung Electronics.
Youngsam Kim serves as President of KEI Consulting where he specializes in industry investing after serving as Trade & Investment Officer at the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy and R&D Head of Korea Electrotechnology Research Institute.
Wook Bang is an academic with world-renowned research in the semiconductor field and is currently leading power semiconductor research at the Korea Electrotechnology Research Institute.
Miyoshi Keita is currently the Chairman of Hitachi High-tech Korea and is an expert in validation equipment.
Tae-Gyung Chung is serving as CEO of Semes, a semiconductor equipment subsidiary of Samsung, since early 2022 after serving as Vice President of the Test and Packaging Center of Samsung Electronics.
The appointed honorary professors will serve as advisors for the university's new semiconductor department that will be launched next year, including the general direction of talent incubation, curriculum setting, on-site training and other initiatives to enhance the educational experience for students. In addition, they wil lact as advisors for city of Busan's plan to cultivate the city's automotive semiconductor industry. As part of its initative to transform and innovate its engineering education, PNU will increase the role played by its honorary professors.
Jaewon Choi, the Dean of PNU's Engineering School stated “We have reached to the top domestic experts in the semiconductor field one by one and each of them were deeply aligned with our mission to cultivate the regional semiconductor industry. We believe that the appointment of these seven honorary professors will have a huge impact on growing the ecosystem for automotive semiconductors in Busan and adjacent regions."
Last year, PNU has declared innovation of its engineering education and semiconductor strategy implementation as top priorities for the university's future. PNU has established in its campus a semiconductor specialization business unit to incubate talent in the automotive semiconductor area and participate in large scale government projects. This year, PNU's Electrical Engineering and Electronics Engineering departments will be integrated, and next year, a new Semiconductor sub-department will be launched within the integrated Electrical and Electronics Engineering department.
